A great walk-in wardrobe isn't about filling a room with shelves. It's about designing storage that suits the way you live.

Before I visit, these are the questions worth thinking about.

Who Will Use the Wardrobe?

Will it be:

• One person?
• A couple?
• A shared family wardrobe?

This determines how the storage is divided.

How Do You Store Your Clothes?

Think about what you own.

Do you need:

• Long hanging for dresses or coats?
• Double hanging for shirts and trousers?
• Lots of shelving?
• Plenty of drawers?

Your wardrobe should suit your clothes—not the other way around.

How Many Shoes Do You Own?

Ten pairs?

Thirty?

One hundred?

Shoe storage is one of the biggest differences between a good wardrobe and a great one.

What Else Needs a Home?

You might also need storage for:
